GOURNES 2010: Gournes Crete Greeceis situated in a perfect location on Crete: enabling you to visit east and west Crete as well as central Crete. Gournes is easy to reach from the airport in Heraklion. In the village of Gournes Pediados there are several nice old Greek / Cretan taverns, bars and restaurants. Most of them are open all year around. There is a kafenion (Greek coffee house and meeting point) that is also the local post office. On the main road are three supermarkets and mini markets. If you walk to the other side of the village you will find the old centre of the village. Here you will find the old church and little old streets, which are so characteristic of Crete. In this area mostly the elderly live.

GOURNES CRETE THROUGH THE YEARS: Just outside the village of Gournes is the former American army base is situated. The old American army base has disappeared and been rebuild as an exhibition area. A lot of public exhibitions are organized on the base: about tourism, building in Greece, fashion, etc. There is also an Olympic swimming pool. The old American base is developing very quickly, among other things there is a research centre about underwater life in Crete. Feel free to take a look! The beaches on the old American base are getting more and more beautiful every year!

    BEAUTIFUL BEACHES IN GOURNES CRETE GREECE: You can choose from several beautiful beaches in Gournes. At five minutes walking distance there is a beach where you can rent sun beds and umbrellas, at four minutes walking distance a rocky beach. You can also go to the large quiet beach on the former American army base (at six minutes walking distance of Zorbas Beach) At About 10 minutes walking distance from Zorbas Beach you will find a beach where you can play volleyball, surf, dive and practice other water sports.. 

  BEACH BOULEVARD IN GOURNES: If you walk from Zorbas Beach towards the beach, you will find after 5 minutes walking a beach boulevard. On the beach boulevard there are a few bars, shops, a mini market and several taverns.

  FISHING in Crete GREECE: In the area of Zorbas Beach are several possibilities to go fishing or snorkelling. Close to Zorbas beach are several coves where you can fish in a quiet and beautiful environment. Fishing rods are available on Zorbas Beach. You can go snorkelling nearby Zorbas Beach. There are several places where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the under water world!

   The village of Gournes, Crete, Greece offers you since December 2005 an new attraction: a very interesting sea aquarium! You are ale to get an impression about the “underwater world” of Crete. It is really worth paying a visit to this splendid aquarium. The sea aquarium is open the whole year round: a nice day out for the whole family on Crete. You are also ale to see magnificent computer animation about the underwater world of Crete. An interesting experience: the aquarium is designed up to the latest standards and offers you lots of information. The sea aquarium of Gournes, Crete, Greece is open daily.

  WATER SPORTS in Crete Greece: Close to Zorbas Beach you can practice several water sports: surfing, sailing, waterskiing, banana rides behind a speedboat…etc.  You can find these water sport possibilities on a 15 minutes distance by foot from Zorbas Beach. On this beach you can also rent sun beds, umbrellas and canoes. There are also possibilities to go to the water park Star Beach in Hersonissos or the water park Aquasplash in Anapoli from Zorbas Beach.

  BUS STOP IN CRETE: From the bus stop on the main road in Gournes buses will go every 30 minutes to Heraklion, Rethinmon, Chania, Chersonissos, Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra and Sitia. At Zorbas Beach we can advise you how to reach a destination by bus. The buses on Crete are really price worthy. The number of the bus stop in Gournes is number eight. At the reception and bar area of Zorbas Beach you will find a departure and arrival schedule of all the buses on Crete.

“WATER CITY” ANOPOLI Crete GREECE: “Water City” is a water park with long slides, which are build alongside the rocks. Water city has seven large swimming pools. Fun for everybody! It is also possible to visit this big water park as a “half day” excursion. If you want more information about “Water City”, do not hesitate to ask us for more information at the reception or bar area.

  BOAT TRIP in Crete Greece: If you walk from Zorbas beach to the beach, you can see a big island lying in the sea: this is Dia Island. You can visit Dia Island with an old fisher’s boat daily. It is an excursion that has a duration of one day. Dia is a nature reservation, you can find the characteristic kri kri goats on Dia. These goats originally come from the Samaria gorge. The boat trips are always providing a barbeque and you can swim and snorkel at a quiet bay..

  SKOTINO CAVE Crete: Six kilometres distance from Gournes, the beautiful cave of Skontino is situated. You can reach the cave easily by foot. The big cave is an important sanctuary from the Minoan century. The cave was studied by the archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans, who also discovered Knossos. Every year, on the 26th of July a local celebration will be celebrated here.

NIROU HANI: Three kilometres distance from Gournes, just outside the village Kokini Hani, you will find the Minoan villa Nirou. This villa dates from 1500 before Christ.
