Muraenidae: Grote familie aalachtigen, meer dan 100 soorten. Komen voor in subtropische zeeën. De bek is zeer groot en wordt telkens geopend en gesloten om vers water door de kieuwen te pompen. Dit wordt door duikers vaak gezien als agressie, maar dat is het zeker niet. Murenen zien slecht maar ruiken erg goed. Dit reuk orgaan hebben ze nodig, voor de jacht in de nacht.
