Walking information about Crete: the speed of the hiking tour will be determined by you. For the most part, we are not dependant on bus or boat schedules (except with the Aredena tour, where we are of course dependant on the leaving of the ferry boat). Hiking is the main goal of this excursion, but if we have more time, we will visit other interesting places along the way.

Hiking on Crete, tour 01: A hiking tour through the Kritsas gorge in Crete, Greece. If you like hiking, but are afraid of heights, this is a very suitable hiking tour for you! From our leaving point we will drive for about 45 minutes. We will make a stop to visit the local museum about traditional manufacturers of olive oil and pottery (entrance 1 euro). From the museum we will drive for another 10 minutes to where our hike will start! For the first two kilometers we will walk on village roads, and then we will walk through olive fields. These small roads were made hundreds of years ago, now they are used by the local sheep men. After a small climb on a hill, we walk to the village of Tapas. On this route we will have an fantastic view! We will stop in Tapas to enjoy a nice lunch in a typical old Cretan mountain cafe. After lunch we will walk down the Kritsas gorge. This downhill walk is not difficult, but we walk on a path with a lot of little stones, so it is essential to wear good shoes.

While hiking through the Kritsas gorge you will notice the gorge becomes much smaller, until it is only about one meter wide. After hiking for about 2 hours, we will reach the village of Kritsa. After our walk though the gorge, you will have the chance to explore this village and to taste some local wine. The whole hike will take about 4 or 5 hours. Your guide is also your driver, so we are flexible to take short or longer breaks along the way. Departure: 9.30 AM, Return: 5.00 PM.

Hiking on Crete, tour 02: Samaria gorge in two days: an experience you will never forget! The Samaria gorge is the longest gorge in Europe, about 17 kilometres total. The Samaria gorge is an impressive hiking tour and we will make sure to take the time to enjoy the fantastic nature of this gorge. To enjoy the Samaria fully, we always suggest that you stay overnight at the end of the gorge, in the beautiful village Agia Roumeli. You are then able to start your hiking tour at a reasonable time and relax in the evening in a lovely quiet tavern, after all the last tourists have left on the ferryboat. Your guide will take you through the gorge, and teach you about all the interesting nature and many other facts. After breakfast we will leave on the ferryboat to visit another village. From this village we will take a taxi or bus back to our car. You are free to decide to either go back to Gournes or visit the town Rethymnon or another small Cretan village. Departure: 7.30 AM.

Hiking on Crete Greece, tour 03: The adventures of Aredena gorge on Crete. From our starting point we will travel to Rethymnon (Western Crete) and to the village of Sfakia. Sfakia is famous for its brave inhabitants who fought in World War II against the invasion of their village. This adventurous hiking tour begins with walking over a 150 meter high bridge looking over the gorge! Then we will take a taxi to the village of Aredena. The hiking tour through the gorge will take about 3 hours. After the walking through the gorge, we will arrive at a quiet beach with a remote tavern. After a short break we will continue to hike over rocks (with a fantastic view over the sea) to the village of Loutro. In Loutro we will stop for lunch, after which we return by ferry boat to the car. This gorge is almost parallel to the Samaria gorge, but it saves almost two hours driving to get there and you rarely see other hikers during this tour. After hiking through this gorge you can honestly say that you saw a part of Crete which is unreachable to most. Departure: 7.00 AM, return: 8.30 PM.

Hiking on Crete, tour 04: The mystery tour on Crete. This walking tour is especially suitable for adventurous hikers and, unfortunately, not for the inexperienced! This hiking tour will take about 5 hours, so it is important that you are reasonably fit and have some hiking experience. This is one of the most exciting tours through Eastern Crete. This means it is nearby, we only need one hour to travel. The first two and a half hours we will be hiking uphill. Afterwards, we will follow an old Minoan route. During this route you will find a lot of Cretan herbs, including thyme, sage, rosemary and oregano. The next climb is not very steep (500 meters), you will need your energy to reach the next Minoan village! From this almost hidden place you will have a magnificent view. We will walk for another 5 kilometers on mountain paths. The atmosphere here is composed of the complete calm and quiet of nature. After we walk for a few more kilometers, we will arrive at a small mountain path in a deserted village. From this deserted village we follow a path that was used in the forties as a water supply canal. At this point you really have to be an experienced hiker and not have a fear of heights. After a short stop to eat something and admire the view, we walk a few kilometers back to the Kafenion where we first started. We did not mention any names of villages from this tour, because this is a completely unknown tour to others. Only a few people know the whereabouts of this hike. We try to keep it this way! Be surprised by this unknown on this adventurous and exciting hiking tour. Maximum number of hikers: 8. Departure: 9.30 AM.

Hiking on Crete, tour 05: Lassithi hiking tour in Crete. We start our walk from a village on the Lassithi plateau and continue uphill for about one hour. Our hiking tour will lead us over mountain paths which give us a fantastic view of the Lassithi plateau. After a brisk walk, we will arrive at a deserted wine yard. It is hard not to feel detached from the rest of the world in this beautiful area. We continue our walk through a rocky area, where again you will have magnificent views over the plateau. The last part of our hiking tour will take us over a path that was used years ago by pilgrims. At the end of our hiking tour we will relax in a local tavern before we return to our accommodation. Departure: 9.30 AM. Return: 5.00 PM.

Hiking on Crete, tour 06: The “goat” gorge. This hiking tour is suitable for the experienced hiker. It is a challenging tour, 200 meters downhill in a gorge of 2.7 kilometers in length. This gorge was recently opened to the public and is still in the process of being restored. The road downhill to the gorge is a muddy path with stones. On our way back we will walk on little stones. We will stop along the way at an old monastery and a traditional mountain village, where you will see an enormous tree! This village has a lot of Venetian influences. This hiking tour will take around 3 ½ hours. Departure: 9.30 AM, return: 4.00 PM.

Hiking on Crete, tour 07:The “three village” tour. This is a simple tour that is suitable for most people! We will start in a local village, where we will visit an old deserted olive oil factory. On the way, you will see a lot of fields where potatoes, onions, lettuce, olives and other fruit and vegetables grow. After a short climb uphill, we will arrive at the second traditional local village; here you will see the real Crete. We will walk further uphill, through the beautiful and wild nature of Crete. In the next village you can enjoy a delicious local dish in a traditional kafenion. From this kafenion is a splendid view of the path we just walked on! Afterwards we will hike back downhill. This walk will take about half a day. Departure: 10.00 AM, return: 2.30 PM.
