Carnival in Gergeri. Gergeri is a Cretan village
close to Zaros en Agia Varvara. Every year you can
enjoy the traditional Greek carnival in Gergeri.
Dressed up shepherds and old Greek costumes parade
on the streets of Gergeri! Nowhere on Crete carnival
is be celebrated as in Gergeri: Cretan live music,
tables and chairs on the streets, delicious food &
wine: all set in a beautiful scenery. If you would
like to come with us to Gergeri, please let us know
upfront!

with live music and Greek mezedes. The music
will start from 21.30 o’clock!

February 2012: Greek BBQ night at Zorbas Island.
This week we offer you Greek specialties from our
wood oven and souvlakis and biftekis from the grill,
salads and several side dishes. Our music theme for
this night is: “music from the 00-years
(2000-2010)”. If you have a request for a special

Monday 20 February 2012:
Our hiking tour through the Hohlakies gorge will take about 4 hours. It is a
beautiful hike, there is only one disadvantage: it is a one way track, so we
will have to walk the same trail back: the gorge ends at the sea front. This

Weekly Greek
Music festival: during the winter you are welcome to
enjoy every Friday night Greek live music night at
Zorbas Island. You are welcome from 21.30 o’clock.
Every week a different Greek band will play Greek
music. We offer you Greek mezedes (small plates with
different Greek specialties) from our wood oven.
This music night is a culture night with Greek
dancing and music from Crete and Greece. The
musicians play and sing acoustic with instruments
from Greece: lira, lauta, gitar, mandoline and
bouzouki. In the summer we organize regular Greek
live music night at sea. You are very welcome!

Geschichten aus Kreta:
Ouzo? Wir wollen Raki!
Bei
Griechenland denkt jeder zuerst an Ouzo - der Werbung zufolge DAS
Nationalgetränk. Falsch! Auf Kreta sieht das natürlich ein bisschen anders aus.
Hier ist das Volksgetränk Nummer Eins der Raki. Eigentlich logisch. Nach dem
Stampfen der Weinbeeren (oft mit bloßen Füßen) um den Saft herauszupressen,
bleiben Traubenreste übrig - zum Wegswerfen zu schade. Früher wurde mit
Mühlsteinen auch noch der letzte Rest Flüssigkeit aus den Trauben gepresst, und
die Traubenschalen mit dem Saft zusammen in einem Fass für 6 bis 8 Wochen
vergoren. Dann wurde das Ganze in einen großen Kupferkessel geschüttet und darin
wurde der Raki destilliert. Aus dieser Zeit stammt auch die "medizinische"
Verwendung des starken Getränks. Zahnschmerzen? Ein paar Mal am Tag mit Raki
spülen. Erkältung? Brust mit Raki einreiben und warm halten. Grippe? Warmen Raki
mit Honig trinken. (Nach zwei Gläsern davon vergisst man dann, dass man krank
ist...).
Heutzutage werden die Traubenreste an Destillerien. Hier auf Kreta heißen diese
"Kazani", nach dem großen Kessel, in dem destilliert wird . In jedem Dorf findet
sich so eine Brennerei. Der Brennmeister berechnet nicht viel für das
Destillieren, meist einen Anteil des Rakis. Von Ende Oktober bis in den Dezember
hinein sind die Brennereien geöffnet um alles zu verarbeiten. Das Destillieren
ist ein Prozess von vielen Stunden - und wird meist gesellig verbracht. Die
ganze Familie kommt mit, Freunde werden eingeladen oder schauen vorbei um zu
gucken. Ein Grill wird befeuert und aus jedem Auto kommt etwas zum Vorschein:
Kartoffeln, um sie in die Glut zu legen, Oliven, Tomaten, Feta, Fleisch für den
Grill. Aus einem anderen Auto holen Leute eine Lyra oder eine Laute zum
Vorschein, die traditionellen kretanischen Instrumente. Die Gesellschaft prüft
den "Protoraki" - diese erste Raki ist so stark, dass er fast als Treibstoff
dienen könnte! Schnell trinken, sonst verfliegt er! Hitzig wird die Qualität
diskutiert. Der von Opa Kostas letzes Jahr war besser! Onkel Giannis findet
seinen eigenen Raki besser. Manolis holt die Lyra heraus und spielt zum Tanz
auf. Mitmachen ist Pflicht!
Jeder,
der sich in dieser Zeit auf Kreta aufhält, sollte einmal in einer Rakibrennerei
vorbeischauen. Die Besitzer zeigen immer gerne, wie der ganze Prozess
funktioniert und lassen Sie gerne ein Getränk probieren... die Chance, dass Sie
vor Mitternacht wieder zuhause sind, ist allerdings nicht sehr große, denn die
kretanische Gastfreundschaft ist einfach einmalig!

Hiking Myli gorge:
We will drive to Rethymnon, after Platanisa close to Perivolia we will turn left
towards Giannoudi. Before the village we turn right, to the starting point of
the Myli gorge.
 
This hike is
approximately 9 kilometres and will take about 4 hours to hike. From the church
we follow the river past Kato Mili and Pano Mili. We will walk through the
village Chromonastri. In the village we turn left via Agios Eftychies (this is
possible in Chromonosti by walking to the church).

Dolphins around Crete: we
take our guests on many boat trips and many times we
are asked if we are going to see dolphins? Yes, it
is definitely possible, but we can’t guarantee it!
There are dolphins in the sea around Crete, but you
have to be lucky to see a dolphin. In the Knossos
Palace are several old paintings of dolphins.
Dolphins were seen more then 3.500 years ago around
Crete! During the past years, we have spotted
dolphins on several occasions. The most impressive,
but also most frustrating time was during a diving
session. It was a lovely day: not a lot of wind, a
temperature around 28 degrees and a calm sea.
Unexpectedly, 10 to 12 dolphins jumped up in the air
around our boat towards the diving location. All our
camera’s and diving equipment were in the boat’s
storage area, so we were not able to take pictures.
This impressive scenery lasted about one minute, as
if the dolphins wanted to show us: we are smarter
then you, you are too late to take a picture! And we
were….. It was a beautiful sight! Afterwards, we
quickly went in the sea from our diving location,
but we did not see another dolphin. The feeling of
seeing so many dolphins at once was exiting!
 
On our way to Heraklion Airport,
on the old national road, we once saw a lot of cars
parked at the seaside. A large group of dolphins
jumped up from the water for about 2 to 3 minutes,
but you probably already guessed: we forgot our
camera!!
We were able to shoot some photos
of dolphins during a boat trip to Dia Island. You
really have to keep your camera ready during this
boat trip! On a sunny day in June we could make
about 3 good photos, but you need a bit of luck!
Also this week we made some beautiful photos of
dolphins. Hopefully, we are able to spot a lot of
dolphins this year around Crete!
