Excursions in Mirtos Crete Greece – Besides Chrissi Island there are more nice places

Chrissi Island close to Crete: Chrissi Island is also known as the Caribbean of Europe. The stunning gold-like beach, the palm trees and the many different shades of blue in the crystal-clear seawater, give you a tropical feel to it. We depart with the boat from the harbour of Ierapetra for a fantastic day in and at the water. Whoever wants, can go for swimming and snorkelling. You can also come with us for a 10km hike all over the island.

Tertsa: 5 kilometres West of van Mirtos is this tiny little village, directly at the coast with fantastic taverns and nice little beaches, very attractive for the nudist.

Mithi: Just 5 kilometres into the mountains you come into this small mountain village with a stunning gorge to walk through.

Christos: From Mithi you drive to this traditional mountain village, from where you reach the next village.

Males: At about 45 minutes drive from Mirtos via Mithi and Christos, you find this fairly large village with some more activity.

Excursions in Mirtos Crete Greece – Hiking is great in this area

Selakano: After Christos you find this perched village, with excellent hiking trails.

Mournies: A typical Cretan farmer’s village near to Mithi.

Ierapetra: The most southern city of Europe where it is nice to go for shopping or walking along the boulevard. This town looks a bit dusty and maybe a little bit messy, but is definitely worth a visit; if only just for shopping. You can go to the typical Cretan market, visit the small harbour, sit down on a terrace and of course look at the many shops and boutiques.

Sarakina gorge: This impressive gorge is not far from the village of Mirtos and is a real challenge to hike through. The hike is about 12 km, but can be adjusted according to the needs. The biggest adventure is during spring and autumn when there is still water in the gorge. We then have to walk parts through and over little streams or even have to wade through rivers. There is a chance that we have to swim small parts. It is a magnificent experience for the more adventurous hiker. The hike through this gorge can be extended with other walks in the area. You can always ask us about the possibilities for walking holidays or multi-day hikes.

Excursions in Mirtos Crete Greece – A walk through the abandoned village of Kalami

Village walk Kalami South Crete: A beautiful hike through the gorgeous nature to the abandoned village of Kalami. The village is hidden between high rocks and is surrounded by flowers and olive groves. The local people abandoned this little village at the end of the 50s. There is a spooky atmosphere, which some people might experience as awkward. The reason for this feeling is that it looks like the village was abandoned from the one day to the other.

Some houses still have personal belongings inside… plates on the kitchen table, a teapot on the countertop. Even in the little school building is the blackboard still hanging on the wall and the abacus stands on the teacher’s desk. You really get a good impression here on how life used to be 60 years ago on Crete. The narrow little streets in the village are made for pedestrians and donkeys, a car can actually not pass. You really go back in time here.
This walk is suitable for everybody; we can adjust the nature hike from easy to challenging, from 5 to 12 kilometres.

Evening excursion Mirtos: In the evening we walk in the pleasant evening air from the village to an observatory close to the village. Here we can watch the stars and planets with a space telescope. It is a magical experience you should not miss when you are in Mirtos.

Psari Forada: A very nice quiet little village about 10 kilometres West from Mirtos with an idyllic square at the sea and a pleasant beach.
