Naxos is a combination of beautiful sandy beaches, with fertile valleys and mountainous beauty. Whether you come to enjoy beautiful beaches, want to learn more about civilization and history or want an active holiday on the Greek island of Naxos, the island is a popular destination for all kinds of interests.

What to do on the Greek island of Naxos: A trip around the central part of the island brings you to traditional villages and interesting historical sites. We certainly recommend you visit ancient ruins and medieval structures, from the famous Portara to the ancient temple of Dimitra and the medieval Venetian castle, in the old city part of the capital. Furthermore, the long stretches of beach and crystal-clear sea water invite you to spend a day. And for the hikers, a walk to the top of Mount Zas (over 1000 meters) through the many hiking trails is definitely worthwhile. When you start from the village of Filioti on Naxos, you come halfway to the top across a cave with stalagmites and stalactites.

Trade has been important for Naxos since ancient times: The Greek historian Herodotus (about 500 BC) describes Naxos as the most prosperous of the Greek islands. In fact, Naxos already dominated in trade at the Cyclades in the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Many products from Naxos were already known in ancient times, such as the Naxos marble, the Amaril (fine-grained rock) and wine. It was one of the first Greek islands to work with marble and the marble was mainly exported to Minoan Crete. The island is still a dominant economic player in the Cyclades, partly thanks to these products.

The most famous myth about Naxos: According to a myth, the Athenian mythical king Theseus had left his beloved Ariadne, goddess of fertility, on Naxos. And that despite she had managed to help him on Crete to return from the Labyrinth with a ball of thread. The unfortunate girl was noticed by the god of the wine Dionysus, who took care of her and became her lover. The fertility of the island is credited to their union.
