The detailed day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: the hidden Katholiko Gorge on Akrotiri & journey to Paleochora
We kick off our four-day hiking trip on the Akrotiri Peninsula, near Chania. Here, we take a unique hike through the mystical Katholiko Gorge—a place steeped in history and natural beauty. Walking between steep rock faces, we pass impressive caves and arrive at the centuries-old, abandoned Katholiko Monastery, which is beautifully built into the rock. The path leads us across an old stone bridge towards the sea, surrounded by fragrant Cretan herbs and the tranquil natural landscape.
After this impressive first hike, we set off on a breathtaking drive through the mountainous interior to the southwest of Crete. Our destination is Paleochora, a charming coastal village picturesquely situated on a narrow peninsula between two bays. Here, we check into our beautiful accommodation, which serves as the perfect place to rest for the coming nights. In the evening, we visit an atmospheric local tavern to enjoy authentic Cretan cuisine and hospitality together.

Day 2: Along the official E4 coastal path from Elafonisi to Paleochora
Early in the morning, we drive to the far southwest of Crete to visit a world-famous natural wonder: the pink beach of Elafonisi. The powdery sand owes its unique pink hue to millions of tiny, crushed seashells, creating a stunning contrast with the shallow, turquoise sea.
From Elafonisi, we embark on one of the island’s most beautiful coastal hikes, following the official E4 trail all the way back to Paleochora. This is a delightful long-distance walk that—despite the distance—is very accessible and not overly strenuous, as there are hardly any significant changes in elevation. The route winds along the rugged coastline, passing through unique cedar forests (Kedrodasos) and hidden coves, and traversing impressive rock formations. Along the way, you are constantly treated to panoramic views of the endless sea and the imposing mountains in the background. Afterward, we relax at our accommodation and end the day at a cozy local tavern.

Day 3: The coastal route from Paleochora to Sougia via ancient Lissos & boat trip
On the third day, a majestic coastal hike is on the agenda, perfectly blending nature with Crete’s rich history. We set off from Paleochora, heading east along the rugged south coast.
After a beautiful walk, we reach ancient Lissos. Tucked away in a secluded, protected valley by the sea, this archaeological gem is completely cut off from the outside world; there are no roads leading here, making the site accessible only on foot or by boat. We take plenty of time here to wander among the historic ruins. Highlights include the ancient Temple of Asclepius with its intact mosaic floors, the impressive Roman tombs, and the centuries-old olive trees that grace the valley. The serene peace and quiet make this a magical spot for a break.
From Lissos, we climb out of the valley and hike through a small, picturesque gorge to the idyllic fishing village of Sougia. Upon arrival, there is ample time to relax on the quiet pebble beach, enjoy a drink at a terrace café, or take a refreshing dip in the clear sea water. In the late afternoon, we board the coastal boat. As the sun slowly sets, we enjoy a comfortable cruise back to Paleochora past the towering cliffs of the south coast, where a delicious dinner at a local tavern awaits us in the evening.

Day 4: Topolia Gorge, the sand pillars of Potamida & the return journey to Kokkini Hani
On our final day, we bid farewell to our accommodation in Paleochora and head north once more through the impressive interior of Western Crete. Our first stop is the imposing Topolia Gorge. We walk through this deep, green ravine, renowned for its steep rock faces, rich Cretan flora, and the impressive Agia Sofia Cave, which houses a small, hidden chapel.
Near Topolia, we make a special stop in Potamida to witness a unique geological spectacle: the famous sand pillars (Komolithi). This remarkable natural landscape consists of striking, pyramid-like hills and pillars made of clay and sand. Centuries of erosion by wind and rain have carved these soft rocks into an almost fairytale-like, surreal landscape that offers fantastic photo opportunities.
