Day 1: From Kokkini Hani to Plakias – Preveli, the Spili Plateau & the South Coast
The first day of our four-day “Unknown Crete” tour takes us from the north—starting at Zorbas Island in Kokkini Hani—straight into the rugged, impressive landscape of southern Crete. Here is what our action-packed opening day looks like:
Morning: departure & the mountain oasis of Spili
We leave the north coast behind and drive along stunning mountain roads toward the heart of the Rethymno region.
The village of Spili: our first major stop is the charming mountain village of Spili—famous for its springs—nestled at the foot of Mount Vorizi. Spili is renowned for its shady village square and fresh mountain water. The highlight of the square is the famous Kefalovrisi fountain:. This is a long row of 25 marble lion heads from which ice-cold, pure mineral water flows directly from the mountains.
The Spili Plateau (Gious Kampos): just above the village, we drive up to the Gious Kampos highlands. In spring, this fertile plateau transforms into a true botanical paradise. The plateau is world-famous for the rare wild red tulip (Tulipa doerfleri) that grows here in the wild, alongside dozens of species of wild orchids, colorful anemones, and fragrant Cretan herbs.

Afternoon: the historic Preveli Monastery & coastal panoramas
After enjoying the floral splendor of the plateau, we head down towards the south coast to visit one of the island’s most impressive historical sites.
Preveli Monastery: perched atop the cliffs with breathtaking views of the Libyan Sea lies the holy monastery of Saint John the Theologian.
Historical significance: the monastery boasts a rich history and played a crucial role in the resistance during World War II, when the monks assisted in the evacuation of Allied soldiers.
The miraculous cross: the monastery church and museum house the famous golden cross of benediction (Timios Stavros); said to contain a relic of the True Cross, it is renowned throughout Crete for its remarkable history.
Panoramic views: from the monastery courtyard, you can enjoy unparalleled views of the coastline, the cliffs, and the spot where the famous palm gorge meets the sea.

Afternoon and evening: arrival in Plakias & a classic seaside taverna
From Preveli, it is just a short drive along the coast to our base for the coming days: Plakias.
Check-in & relax: we arrive at our accommodation. Here, you can unwind, take a dip in the pool, and enjoy the panoramic view over Plakias Bay.
Dinner at a classic seaside taverna: as the sun sets, we walk together to an authentic, classic Greek taverna right by the water. We sit down for a traditional meze evening—a table filled with delicious, locally prepared dishes, fresh salads, regional cheeses, and typical Greek specialties—accompanied by the sound of the sea in the background.

Day 2: From Plakias to Frangokastello, Sfakia, Anopolis, Aradena, Finikas & Loutro
On the second day of our “Unknown Crete” tour, we venture deeper into the rugged and legendary region of southern Crete. This day is dedicated to imposing castles, spectacular gorges, authentic mountain villages, and a magical coastline accessible only by boat or on foot.
Morning: Frangokastello Castle & coffee in Chora Sfakion.
We start the day with a beautiful drive along the dramatic south coast, where the mountains plunge steeply into the Libyan Sea.
Frangokastello: our first stop is the famous medieval fortress of Frangokastello, situated right by the beach. This castle was built by the Venetians in the 14th century to protect the region against pirates and the rebellious local population.
History & legends: the castle is renowned not only for its impressive walls and towers but also for the legendary phenomenon of the Drosoulites (the “dew shadows”). According to local lore, the ghosts of fallen freedom fighters appear here at dawn during late spring.

A beautiful journey through the lesser-known parts of Crete
Chora Sfakion: after visiting the castle, we drive on to the harbor town of Chora Sfakion, the historic heart of the indomitable Sfakia region.
Coffee stop by the harbor: we make a delightful stop along the picturesque waterfront for a fresh Greek coffee or a refreshing freddo cappuccino, while gazing out at the bobbing fishing boats.
Afternoon: the mountain landscape of Anopolis & the famous Aradena Bridge
From the coast, we wind our way up spectacular mountain roads, heading deep into the heart of the mountains.
Anopolis (Chania): we visit the distinctive mountain village of Anopolis. This traditional village exudes the pure, authentic atmosphere of the Cretan countryside, far removed from mass tourism. Here, you experience the genuine hospitality of the islanders and enjoy the serene tranquility and impressive natural scenery.

Aradena & the Aradena Bridge: the breathtaking Aradena Gorge is located right next to the village
The wooden bridge: we visit the famous steel-and-timber girder bridge that spans the deep gorge. With a drop of no less than 138 meters, it is one of the highest bungee jumping spots in Europe. The view from the bridge—straight down into the abyss and out towards the sea—is simply spectacular.
The ghost village: at the far end of the bridge lies the abandoned old village of Aradena, where dilapidated stone houses serve as reminders of a bygone era.

Afternoon: by water taxi via Finikas to picturesque Loutro
After our mountain adventure, we descend towards the coastal village of Finikas, a hidden gem tucked away in a quiet bay.
Finikas: this tiny, sheltered harbor is one of the south coast’s best-kept secrets. The tranquility and the crystal-clear turquoise sea make it an idyllic spot.
By water taxi to Loutro: from the coast, we board a water taxi for a short, spectacular ride across the deep blue water to Loutro.
A car-free paradise: Loutro is a unique, car-free fishing village accessible only by boat or on foot. With its whitewashed houses, bright blue shutters, and quiet bay, it feels as though time has stood still here. We take a stroll through the narrow alleyways and soak up the unique atmosphere of this secluded coastal village.

Evening: dinner at a family-run tavern beneath the tamarisk trees
In the late afternoon, we sail back and return, satisfied, to our accommodation in Plakias.
Dinner ‘right by the sea’: in the evening, we take our guests to a truly special, classic family tavern. It is not merely located on the coast; it sits practically in the sea, sheltered beneath the characteristic, shady tamarisk trees.
Cretan meze: here, we enjoy an extensive dinner featuring artisanal Greek meze prepared with fresh local ingredients, while the sea gently laps against the quay. An unforgettable end to an impressive day!

Day 3: A journey of discovery around Plakias – Mirthios, Kalypso Beach, Damnoni & the ancient watermill
For those who would like a day of rest… A lovely beach day in Plakias is also an option.
On the third day of our four-day “Unknown Crete” tour, we stay close to our base but discover the true gems in the immediate vicinity of Plakias. We combine authentic mountain culture, impressive history, and some of the south coast’s most spectacular bays into a relaxed and varied excursion.
Morning: panoramas & narrow streets in Mirthios

We start the day with a short drive up into the mountains just above the bay.
The mountain village of Mirthios: this picturesque village sits high on the mountainside, offering unparalleled panoramic views across the entire Bay of Plakias and the Libyan Sea.
A walk through the alleys: we take a delightful stroll through the narrow, winding streets of Mirthios. Here, you will find traditional stone houses, flower-filled courtyards, artisan shops, and charming village squares where time seems to stand still.
Afternoon: the ancient watermill & the hidden coves of Kalypso and Damnoni
After visiting the village, we continue our tour of the historical and natural highlights around Plakias.
The ancient watermill of Plakias: tucked away in the greenery near the stream, we visit the old Plakias watermill. This historic landmark serves as a reminder of the region’s agricultural past, when the powerful mountain streams were used to grind grain for the local community.

Damnoni
Kalypso Beach (Pirates’ Fjord): next, we drive to the spectacular Kalypso Beach. This bay—also known as the Pirates’ Fjord—is nestled between towering, steep cliffs. The clear, deep-blue water and dramatic rock formations make this one of the most unique and photogenic spots on the south coast.
Damnoni Beach: our tour then takes us to the beautiful beach of Damnoni. Surrounded by impressive mountains, this wide bay boasts a lovely sandy beach and crystal-clear water. It is the perfect place to enjoy the fresh sea breeze, take a stroll along the water’s edge, or simply soak up the seaside tranquility.
Evening: a classic tavern with Greek music, wine, and mezedes
After a day full of discovery, we return to our accommodation to get ready for another atmospheric evening.
A true Greek evening: in the evening, we take our guests to a classic, atmospheric tavern.
Music and culinary delights: Accompanied by a delicious glass of local wine and captivating, authentic Greek music playing in the background, we enjoy a variety of fresh Greek mezedes. An evening filled with joy, good conversation, and the ultimate holiday feeling!

Day 4: Kourtaliotiko Gorge, Arkadi Monastery, Melidoni & return to Zorbas Island
On the fourth and final day of our “Unknown Crete” tour, we conclude our journey of discovery in style. After a delicious breakfast in Plakias, we leave the south coast and embark on an impressive journey through spectacular scenery and past rich cultural and historical treasures, before returning to Zorbas Island in the late afternoon.
Morning: Kourtaliotiko Gorge & the seven waterfalls
We begin the day by visiting one of Crete’s most impressive natural wonders.
Kourtaliotiko Gorge: we drive into the rugged Kourtaliotiko Gorge, where towering rock faces rise hundreds of meters high on either side. The gorge is renowned for the impressive sound of the wind whistling through the rocks and the vast colonies of birds of prey soaring above the mountains.

Kourtaliotiko Gorge
The Holy Church & the seven waterfalls: in the heart of the gorge, we descend to the picturesque little church of Agia Dynami. Close to this historic chapel, the seven natural springs of the Kourtaliotis River converge. Here, you can see powerful mountain water gushing from the rocks and cascading down through the greenery in enchanting waterfalls—a magical, cooling spot amidst nature.
Afternoon: the historic Arkadi Monastery & the mystical Melidoni Cave
After our adventure in the gorge, we continue our journey north to visit two of the region’s most iconic sites.
Arkadi Monastery: situated on a lush plateau surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, this majestic monastery is Crete’s most important national monument.
History & architecture: with its beautiful Venetian Baroque façade, the monastery exudes a profound sense of serenity. Arkadi is a symbol of the Cretan struggle for freedom; a heroic yet tragic event took place here during the 1866 uprising—an event that remains deeply etched in the hearts of the local people to this day. We take plenty of time to explore the church, the museum, and the historic courtyard.
Melidoni Cave (Gerontospilios): next, we drive to the impressive Melidoni Cave. This historic cave boasts a rich past dating back to the Stone Age and the Minoan civilization, when it served as a place of worship. With its vast underground chamber, breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites, and fascinating history, it makes for an impressive stop.

Late afternoon: return to Zorbas Island & sharing stories by the sea
In the late afternoon, we enjoy a relaxed drive back to our base in Kokkini Hani, arriving later that afternoon.
Sharing stories at the long table: we bring this unforgettable four-day journey to a close together at our familiar long table right by the sea. Over snacks and drinks—with the sound of the waves and the setting sun in the background—we look back on all the impressions, adventures, and special moments of our journey through the lesser-known side of Crete.
