From 12 to 15 April 2027, Zorbas Island invites you on a breathtaking journey of discovery through the rugged, authentic southwest of Crete. And April is the perfect month for this trip: the spring sun isn’t yet too intense, the mountainsides are in full bloom, and the fresh sea air energizes you with every step.
E4 Paleochora 2027
Our base for the duration of the trip is the charming coastal village of Paleochora. Situated on a narrow peninsula flanked by the sparkling Libyan Sea on both sides, the town offers the perfect blend of Greek hospitality, delightful tavernas, and tranquility. So here, we spend the night, unwind with a drink, and reflect on the day’s experiences.
The itinerary: a journey through history and wild nature
On this four-day hiking tour, we combine the absolute highlights of the legendary E4 trail with hidden gems that most tourists never get to see.
The secrets of Akrotiri: the Katholiko Gorge & the Kolymbari Monastery. We begin our adventure on the impressive Akrotiri Peninsula near Chania. Here, we venture into the Katholiko Gorge, one of the island’s oldest and most spiritual sites. As we descend between steep rock faces, we pass ancient hermit caves where monks lived in solitude centuries ago. The absolute highlight is the abandoned Katholiko Monastery; built spectacularly into the cliffside, it is connected by a massive stone bridge spanning the gorge.
On the peninsula, we also visit the impressive Kolymbari Monastery (Moni Gonia). This 17th-century fortress-like monastery sits right by the sea and is steeped in history—from precious icons to traces of the many battles fought for Crete’s freedom.
Otherworldly nature: the clay pillars of Potamidi & Topolia. Crete is famous for its mountain peaks, but at Potamidi, you feel as though you are on another planet. Here, the famous clay pyramids (Komolithi) rise from the landscape—unique, golden-yellow conical hills shaped by centuries of erosion. We hike past these fascinating natural formations and explore the lush Potamidi Gorge. Naturally, we also traverse the impressive landscape surrounding the Topolia Gorge, where wild vegetation and imposing rock formations dominate the scenery.
The Anidri Gorge & enchanting Paleochora
Starting from our base in Paleochora, we head into the Anidri Gorge. This hike takes us through an idyllic valley filled with fragrant herbs, thyme, and wild goats. The path winds steadily downwards until the gorge suddenly opens up to the fantastic, tranquil beaches of Gialiskari. A refreshing dip in the clear water after the hike is the ultimate reward!
Along the E4 coastal route: from Sougia to ancient Lissos. A true highlight of the week is the coastal hike between Sougia and Paleochora. This section of the E4 trail offers breathtaking views of the deep blue sea. Halfway through the trek, we reach a hidden valley accessible only on foot or by boat: ancient Lissos.
In ancient times, Lissos was a major therapeutic center, renowned for its healing springs. Here, we literally walk through history. You will find the ruins of an ancient temple of Asclepius featuring beautiful mosaic floors, rock-cut tombs, and a serene tranquility found nowhere else.
