Skopela Gorge

Skopela Gorge on Crete: We start the walk in an old Venetian village from 1583. Through olive fields, we come to another small village with about 20 inhabitants left. After this village, we slowly descend through olive fields to a gorge.

The weather this week in Crete (Zorbas Island – Kokkini Hani) until 6 January 2026. Mild winter weather, between 17-18 degrees. Sun, clouds and a few local showers.

On behalf of the entire Zorbas Team, we wish all our guests and loyal followers a fantastic New Year and a very travel-filled 2026! In this gorge, a dry riverbed, grow all kinds of herbs and flowers such as oregano, thyme, sage, irises (in spring) and oleanders (in summer). We walk up into the gorge, which was once carved out by ice and water. The gorge shows beautiful different geological layers.

After the gorge, we ascend quite a bit, with beautiful views. We walk among olive trees and grape vines. We then walk along a path where we regularly encounter goats and sheep in spring to a cave church.

After this church, we walk back to the village where we started via a dry riverbed. With a bit of luck, we see turtles along the way. We end the walk with a considerable climb until we reach the village again.

  • Length: about 11 km
  • Difference in altitude: about 300 metres
